Thousands of plants and animals are being genetically engineered - foods for longer shelf life, crops to tolerate more poison chemicals, and pigs so that their hearts can be transplanted into people.  But what are the effects of this new technology on farmers, our food supply, public health, and the environment? What makes people different - the genes we inherit from our parents, the environment we grow up in, or the choices we make?  This film examines the ethical issues associated with DNA testing and sets the stage for a national debate on the dangers of genetic discrimination and eugenics.  Honors:  Cine Golden Eagle, Gold Apple from the National Educational Media Network, Bronze Award at the Columbus Film Festival.

Making Perfect People

The real life stories of differently able couples, making their own choices about genetic testing as they become parents.  Pregnancy is a time of hope and vulnerability when parents want their child to be perfect.  At times like this the dilemmas people face don’t all have easy answers even the parents may disagree about what to do.

Why do people want children and how does DNA testing fit into that?  What is a ‘normal’ human being?  If genetic engineering can create happier, healthier humans, why not prevent people with ‘defects’ from having children or clone those who have the ’best’ DNA?  Should we enhance the DNA of some to create super-humans, mentally and physically gifted?  Will the future see a genetic underclass whose parents didn’t “correct” their genetic anomalies or “improve” their genetic inheritance?
