At a time when millions have been thrown out of work, and many are losing their homes, the usual economic solutions are not working.  Now more people are willing to think outside the box and re-invent our failing economy.   Businesses owned by their employees are attracting a lot of attention.  Worker-owned firms tend to be more fun to work in, more profitable and innovative, and more committed to the communities where they are based.

 

SHIFTCHANGE visits several worker owned enterprises in North America, as well as the renowned Mondragon Cooperatives in the Basque region of northern Spain, to showcase employee-owned businesses that compete successfully in today’s economy while providing dignified jobs in democratic workplaces.
